Pagan folk: Breathing New Life Into Ancient Traditions
Laguz started in the south of the Netherlands in 2012 as a small acoustic folk project, built around old stories, early music, and a shared sense of atmosphere. Over time, the sound grew deeper and more layered, but it’s always stayed close to something earthy and traditional.
Most of the songs are original, moving between English and other European tongues. They tend to revolve around nature, older ways of thinking, and the cycles that shape how people live. The name Laguz comes from the water rune—something that flows and shifts—which felt right early on and still does.
The first single, Minne, came out in 2023. A year later, the debut album A View from Down Below followed, moving from southern to northern landscapes in both sound and theme. In early 2025, it was reissued with a booklet that goes further into the ideas behind it.
Over the fall/winter months, two new songs have been released: I Taliesin and Marwnad yr Ehedydd. A third will follow on April 3rd. Together, they make up the EP Songs for Taliesin.
Live or on record, Laguz is sometimes about ritual performance, sometimes about dance, and sometimes more about setting a mood...
